Summary

In this project, I created a concept for a mobile banking app. I focused on the core functionalities such as sending money, overview of the account’s balance with real life updates and card control services. The goal was to conceptualise a clean, easy to use interface that provides a great user experience to the users. Thinking about how young adults can feel about finances, I started off with creating user persona, empathy map and a user journey map. From there, I brainstormed, made sketches and created wireframes and final designs

Brief

“Nowadays, so many mobile banking apps are either too stripped down or too complex for the everyday, casual user. We want the design to reflect the simplicity, ease-to-use and excellent user experience we wish to provide.”

The focus is to design a banking product that is fast and simple to use anywhere on the go. We are aiming at students as well as young adults, who are looking for a simple solution to online banking. We assume our target audience will have at least a high school degree and live with some sort of sustainable income.

Design Process

To better understand user behaviour, I started off with creating a user persona that represents the target user in the current economy. Based on this persona, I proceeded in creating an empathy map to understand the feelings users have towards money and banking. Creating a user journey map helped me to understand the user needs and emotions when making a transaction.

Dealing with money can make users anxious based on their income, which implies a person's economic situation. With rising costs of living, housing market crisis and inflation, young adults’ relationship to finances has changed compared to their parents. In general, this age group can afford less than their parents could at their age.

These are important considerations when designing, especially when keeping in mind that users will be making bigger and important transactions. I created a user journey map for the scenario of paying rent, which is where a large proportion of many users’ income goes to. The actions and tasks the user needs to perform were outlined and the emotions they have when they go through during this process (see user journey map below).

After getting a good understanding of how users might feel using the app, I started sketching out possible solutions. I made several sketches and then translated the most appealing ones into a wireframe. As the final step, I created a clickable, high fidelity prototype.

Learnings

In this project, I practised my design skills by creating a concept for an online banking app. Finance and banking is a field with lots of opportunities. While working on this concept, I saw how interesting the research behind such a product is and would enjoy working on a product related to finance in the future.
